In the Field with Foxes

Patches of cottonwool cloud drifted across the blue sky dulling the light and cooling the temperature as I snuck into position just out from a thick clump of blackberries. The afternoon would be spent sitting in ambush in the hope of photographing a resident rabbit or two.

Sinking the Ships of the Desert

Sometimes promises made around the campfire can come back to bite you, especially after the assistance of a few cold ales. And this morning, as my swag rustled and I awoke to a starry outback sky and one raring-to-go British hunter, I was starting to think this just might be another of those occasions.

.358 Mitchell Express - a lifetime dream comes true

Dreams are often just that, but this one actually eventually came true. To build a rifle in my own calibre was always something I have wanted to do, but time and money were two obstructions that always seemed to stand in the way. Finally it was decided to just go ahead and do it.

Longthorne Shotguns

Longthorne shotguns are renowned for being light to handle, but they are certainly not ?lightweights? in manufacturing terms.

.17 Myra Mite

Arthur Langsford was somewhat of a visionary in the firearms industry and those who knew him could be forgiven for thinking he was a bit out there when it came to cartridge design back in the early 1970's.

Bucket List Chital (page 80) Issue 80 (click the pic for an enlarged view)

Bucket List Chital

As my hunting career progressed I began thinking about species I had on my bucket list. If I was to complete the taking of all six deer species in Australia,Chital and Rusa were all that remained.

Down in Mexico (page 93) Issue 80 (click the pic for an enlarged view)

Down in Mexico

My plan was to hunt Coues deer in Mexico, Mountain Lion in Colorado or Utah, and Barbary sheep (also called Aoudad) in New Mexico. The deer and lion hunts were with outfitters and guides, the Aoudad was not. There was a fourth component to the trip - attending the annual SCI hunting convention in Reno, Nevada.

Scientific Hunting: Megafauna

Megafauna are a long since extinct group of very large marsupials (related to kangaroos), lizards and birds that used to dominate all Australian ecosystemssome 40,000 years ago. They included among their numbers a giant wombat weighing 2700 kg (Diprotodont), a rather large kangaroo (Giant short faced kangaroo), giant predatory lizard (Megalania), a large flightless predatory bird (Geniornis) and a rather nasty and bitey tree kangaroo or marsupial lion (Thylacaleo) that leapt from tree branches to devour its large prey with sabre tooth tiger like fangs.

Shotgun Shooting Techniques (page 110) Issue 80 (click the pic for an enlarged view)

Shotgun Shooting Techniques

If you have the opportunity to watch a good shotgun shooter in action it all appears effortless. They seem smooth, calculated and it all appears very natural. They look like it happens for them in slow motion, whereas us mere mortals can look rigid, jerky and rushed. Why is it so? Because good shotgunners have the fundamental techniques down pat. They have practiced, learned from their mistakes and strive to put the fundamentals in place each and every time they take a bead and pull the trigger.

Black Bear in Canada (page 117) Issue 80 (click the pic for an enlarged view)

Black Bear in Canada

The proper storage of game meat in the field is something we as hunters are often guilty of being under prepared for. The primary focus is usually on the taking of the game, when its handling afterwards, is of equal importance.

Gundog in the City... Part 9 Gun Fire & Swimming

In this second article about the young adult period for your dog, think about other young adult animals, and you’ll be able to expect what is coming. She will have periods where she’ll loose focus, there’ll be times she’ll push her weight around and try you and your family. If you have put in the time and been patient to date, your relationship will be strong, you second guess her pretty well, and the training time with you and her “jobs” will be the best times she has all day. You are well set to continue her education. The following commands will add to her usefulness and complete her basic education.
