Duck Season Basics For the duck hunter, there’s nothing better than being in the right place at the right time when those ducks are flaring all around your hide and the shotgun barrels are smokin’ hot! Text and photography by Adrian Kenney. |

Hogs Up Close One look at the area had my pulse starting to rise. I already had a sense of excitement at being given permission to hunt on a new block of land in the Macquarie Marshes and now as I drove further in I could see a large area of reeds. I knew there was a great chance of getting on to a few pigs in those reeds. Text and photography by Darren Shelly. |

Hunting the North Face When I first started hunting Sambar deer 35 years ago it took me about 5 years to even see a Sambar Deer! We were fairly laid back about our hunting and just enjoyed our time in the bush with plenty of trout fishing thrown in. In those days of course there were nowhere near the numbers of deer that are about today and there was very little information available about where and how to hunt them, a lot has changed in the deer hunting world since the mid-seventies. Text and photography by Kevin Gittings. |

N.T. Buffalo Meets .338 Win Mag As Robert Ruark, a past passionate hunter of the African scene and a well read writer, aptly described the way he felt when leaving the magical land after a safari, it was as if a part of him stayed behind in those special places until he returned to take it back. I couldn’t agree with him more as I share the same sentiment and feeling about our Top End, after having experiencing it for the first time a few years ago. Text and photography by Sam Garro. |

Perazzi - Passion, Pride, Perfection Perazzi catalogue, page 56. “Game Models 28 Gauge.” I was mesmerized by the five exquisite, miniature guns... Perazzi MX28. The die is cast. Text by Gary Przibilla. |

Roar of the Mataura Stags A decade ago I had successfully hunted wild boar in the Omarama region of New Zealand. Now, after a long absence, I had returned to pursue the majestic Red Stag in the Mataura Ranges. Text and photography by Alex Caruana. |

Remington’s Centrefire Pump Guns Remington’s foray into the world of pump action rifles goes back more than 100 years. It is a tradition they have continued to this day. Text and photography by Layne Simpson. |

The Hunting Camp Hunting with a group of teenagers is probably a total anathema to most of you. ‘Hunting’ sounds good, but add the other two words, ‘group’ and ‘teenagers’ and suddenly you remember you need to stay home and feed the cat! Text and photography by Rob Thomson. |

Varminting with the .222 Rem The .222 Rem was at one time the most popular centrefire cartridge in Australia. Today, it is eclipsed in that role by the .223, but it still has plenty to offer. Text and photography by David Duffy. |

Scientific Hunting: Sambar and Rusa Deer Sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) and rusa deer (Cervus tomorensis) are two of my favourite species. They have so much in common but yet are so very different when you encounter them in the field, from their size, to their behaviour, to their habitat preferences and of course how you hunt them. Both species are from Asian origins with rusa deer endemic to the Indonesian islands and sambar deer ranging from the Himalayas to the sub-continent and right down throughout southeast Asia to the Philippine islands. Text and photography by Dr Andrew Moriarty, Wildlife Scientist and Manager. |

Gunfire at Rork’s Drift It was July 4th, and silent men with guns disembarked from blacked out vehicles in the freezing pre-dawn light. They descended into gunpits, dug into the sandy soil along the banks of the Buffalo River only a short distance from the site of the Battle of Rork’s drift so many years ago. Cases of ammunition were handed down to them along with some drinks and snacks, it was going to be a long day. Text and photography by John Pearson. |

Guns of the Clarke Guns When we think of our most ruthless bushrangers, names like Ned Kelly or Dan Morgan come to mind; but it was a little known gang in the wild escarpment country south-eastward from present day Canberra, that holds the notorious record for being the most deadly outlaws, particularly in relation to police casualties. Text and photography by Greg Powell. |
