Working Sambar Scent I was making my way along a large ridgeline at the end of quite a successful day’s hunting; successful not in shots fired or trophies taken, but in close encounters with about ten Sambar that day. In the country I was hunting where the deer are quite spread out, the dog was having a pretty good day and she was at the top of her game allowing me to film her pointing unalarmed deer. Text and photography by Kevin Gittings. |

Inland Hunting Adventure For many years I considered the advertisements by “Western Hunting” regarding payment for access to “Inland Hunting Properties”. But I always decided against the idea until now. With no contacts or places to hunt in New South Wales or Queensland it was time for me to bite the bullet and splash some cash. After a pleasant phone call to Kerrie at Western Hunting, an 86,000 hectare property was chosen for our inland hunting adventure! Text and photography by Adrian Kenney. |

The Hog Hunting Escape It had been nothing short of an absolute crap week at work; and that Friday RDO couldn’t come around quick enough for this stressed out little camper. Well, at least that’s where I wanted to be; away from phones and computers... camping. Text and photography by Melanie Napier. |

Field Dressing and Recovery of Fallow Deer Nowadays it appears that fallow deer are becoming the most common deer species hunted in Australia. Their numbers and distribution in the wild have dramatically increased since the collapse of farming fallow deer in the nineteen eighties. For some hunters, fallow deer have a more particular attraction. Since they are chiefly to be found associated with the fringes of agriculture by their very nature, they are generally more easily accessed than, for example, sambar. Furthermore their smaller size and preferred habitat makes field recovery significantly less arduous. Text and photography by Dr. Matt Draisma. |

Shotgun Shooting – Lead Sporting Clays (Field and Game) clay target competitions evolved directly as a result of hunting. Hunters wanted the ability to practice on targets which resembled quarry, be it feather or fur, at a seemingly infinite number of different distances, angles, heights and speeds. Everything that follows in this article is as directly applicable to hunting game with a shotgun as it is to seriously pursuing the winners circle in any of the clay target disciplines. Text and photography by Matt Dwyer. |

Inletting a 2-piece Stock Most gun guys like to tinker and are pretty good with their hands. Even if you aren’t very “practical”, you can achieve a great deal by going slowly and considering your next steps. The rewards of taking on a project like this are enormous, you will have a gun without parallel that fits you perfectly and of which you can take great pride, because you did it yourself! Building a Forge for Knife Making at Home After playing with making knives and sheaths over the years, I decided that it would be really handy to be able to soften or harden metal here at home as part of my knife making. There was plenty of thought given to this idea over a fair period of time and getting in touch with a mate, Rob in the Northern Territory, he gave me a few tips on forging. This just whetted my appetite even more, so I then started looking around for odds and ends of which a reasonable working forge could be made from. Text and photography by Ted Mitchell Snr. |
