Winter Foxes – Expect the Unexpected! Vulpes Vulpes who is he? He’s an apex predator, highly intelligent extremely cunning, and when educated can be very elusive. But Vulpes vulpes is also opportunistic, and can be very bold at times, this being his major downfall. He is also probably Australia’s most well-known pest animal, and has been targeted by all means of eradication possible. Dogs, spotlighting, whistling, baiting, trapping, and yet still vulpes vulpes manages to not only survive but thrive. It’s amazing how such a pest animal that holds so many cunning attributes can be at times so very unpredictable. Text and photography by Luke Williams. |

Out West – Hog Fest! Although my brother Blake has hunted since he was a small kid, his only trip out west for pigs was a bitter disappointment. We had hunted a property for 3 days with not much luck. The only time we saw pigs, Blake was back at camp with a stomach bug (not grog related). So, being the good brother that I am, I decided to try again and head out to southwest Queensland to some channel country that I have access to. Text and photography by Reid Hjorth. |

Model 98% Transitory bolt rifles – Omega III (1972-1977), Golden Eagle Model 7000 (1975-circa 1980) and Browning Acera (1999-2002) – ignored the “Oberndorf” signposts, and inevitably fell by the wayside. Old-timers – Winchester M70 (1936-), Remington M700 (1962-) and Ruger M77 (1967-) – continue to rub shoulders with the Mauser M98 (1898-) … the most successful bolt action design of all time. Text by Gary Przibilla. |

Hunter Instinct Over the years, as man has become self sufficient and less dependent on hunting, he has gradually lost some of his instinctive hunting skills and urge to hunt, albeit it still lives in us, in some stronger than others. Those who today still depend on hunting to survive such as isolated tribes in Africa, the Amazon, New Guinea closer to home, and other indigenous people in remote areas of the world, their hunting skills are used on a daily basis and are far more highly developed than those of the recreational hunter. The Giant .22 Hornet – Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 Winchester’s Pre-1964 Model 70 .22 Hornet - While not particularly rare as pre-64 Model 70 Winchesters go, in the production of some 20,306 rifles, it was and is a strange and challenging way to put one of the smallest centrefire rifle cartridges into a production firearm. Text and photography by Andy Montgomery. |
